You may have seen some purple posters around church with the words, “Women at Above Bar Church” and a small decorative tree in the middle of the letter “O”.
You may have wondered, “Hmm, well, yes, we all know there are women at Above Bar Church”. Or, you may have been in the service in September, where we launched a new initiative for women and wondered, “Hmm, so why is this happening now?”
There is a time and a season for everything and we believe that God is doing something new among the women here at Above Bar Church.
In the hearts of several women, God has birthed a desire to begin something new: to gather us together as women, who seek to learn and grow as followers of Jesus.
A new beginning
We can learn about Jesus in many ways. But one way the Bible mentions is by listening and learning from those who are further along the path of faith.
In Paul’s letter to Titus, he encourages the church to teach and encourage – and he specifically tells women to teach and encourage other women (Titus 2:3-4). We at Above Bar Church want to take this seriously. We want to teach and encourage, woman to woman.
Our purpose is three-fold.
Firstly, we seek to inspire women to love God more fully and deeply. This means learning to love God through good times and hard times, in every season of life.
Secondly, we seek to encourage women to follow Jesus in the details of our lives. What does it mean to live out the values of God’s kingdom when we are at home, at work, on the bus — or even when on holiday?
Finally, we seek to support women as they reach out and share the love of God with their friends, family and neighbours.
The year ahead
It is now November and we’ve already had a great start.
We’ve been to a women’s conference in London, had an early morning breakfast and even an Above Bar Church Bake Off. Not everything will be of interest to every woman in Above Bar Church, but we do hope that, if you’re a woman, you will join us at some point.
It is our intention to plan a variety of events that take place at a variety of times. Just keep an eye out for posters or announcements of upcoming events. We may even have opportunities for men to help out and support the women at Above Bar Church!
So, whoever you are, there are ways to be involved in encouraging women in their faith.
At Above Bar Church, we are interested in whole-life discipleship. Whether you come and participate in an event, support in set-up, or even pray for us (men, we’d appreciate your prayers too). There is something for everyone. Welcome to the family!
