About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who We Are

We’re a community of people who love God and want to follow his Son, Jesus Christ, in all of life. We love to share the life-transforming hope we have as a result of Jesus’s death and resurrection.

Where We Come From

The history of Above Bar Church goes back to the 1870s. We have been based at our current City site since 1886, with the current building opening in 1981.

Where We're Headed

In recent years the vision of the church is about engaging with people in a wide range of practical, social and ultimately spiritual ways, examples include our Big Breakfast community (free breakfast for the homeless and vulnerable), Formation School (training and equipping leaders) and the CAP Debt Centre.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic the church has been actively involved with Love Southampton (a collaborative network of churches sharing their love for the city) and The Big Difference (a food redistribution project).

What This Means For You

What does this mean for you? Most importantly, you're always welcome at Above Bar Church. We're saving a seat for you. Wherever you're at in your faith journey, you'll always be accepted as part of the Above Bar Church family.
