With a lot of talk recently about whole life discipleship and life on the frontline recently, we sat down with Paul Webber to ask more about discipleship at Above Bar Church.
Hi Paul, could you tell us a little bit about the recent discipleship teaching series?
Yeah sure. The word disciple means follower. So the series was unpacking what is means to be a follower of Jesus. We tried to unpack what the bible says about following Jesus and challenge some of our ideas about what it means to follow Jesus, namely:
1. A disciple is totally devoted to Jesus. “He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
2. We were made for community. In a mobile, fast paced world, the church is to be people’s ‘extended family’ - sharing meals together and supporting one another.
3. It’s for the whole of life. What does it mean to be a blessing to those we work with, live close to and share leisure time with?
Why do we suddenly seem to be talking about discipleship so much?
Our vision states that Above Bar Church exists to make and mature disciples. We are refining what this means.
So how will the theme of discipleship be developed this year?
There will be many opportunities to explore how our 4 values - Bible centred, God dependent, authentic community and mission focussed can shape our individual lives.
We are also really excited about the discipleship day on 2nd March when Mark Greene from the London institute of contemporary Christianity will be speaking. It’s sure to be a great day with worship, sermons and an opportunity to share lunch.
We also have a whole life discipleship teaching series coming soon on Sunday mornings as a follow on from the discipleship day.
Finally, all small groups (homegroups, prayer partnerships, work placed groups, missional communities and inter-church groups) are encouraged to use the ‘Life on the Frontline’ course material from LICC. It’s a packed year for whole life discipleship at Above Bar Church!
Finally, what is #abcdiscipleship ?
Discipleship is all about communication and we really want to create a two-way conversation! If you are on Twitter, be sure to make use of our hashtag #abcdiscipleship
