It is an incredibly exciting time for us at Above Bar Church as students come flooding back in to Southampton! What an opportunity to be a part of what God is going to do in their lives this year. My prayer for all students is that they would grow closer to Jesus and honour him in every aspect of their lives, for all of life.

This means Hungry is also back! Hungry is the name of our student group which takes places every Wednesday evening. It’s a time to have a hot meal, get to know other students, study the Bible (we are studying Romans this term), and pray. Personally, it is one of the highlights of my week!

We are keen for every student who settles into our church family to have someone investing in them one-to-one or in a small group. From my experience, the mentor is as blessed as the mentored!

We are also excited for our Weekend In and Weekend Away, where we have extended time to get to know each other, have fun, and focus on God. Our Weekend Away’s focus on the Holy Spirit has me particularly pumped!

How can the wider church help?

The apostle Paul writes,

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. (Ephesians 2:19–21, ESV)

Be the Church! Welcome students in to the church. Invite them round for a meal. Introduce them to fellow students. Pray for them, encourage them, and show them ways they can get involved in the church. Offer to mentor them!

Students often tell me that one of the game-changers for them is meeting other people in the church they wouldn’t normally talk to. Maybe you’d be interested in hosting students every so often for a meal? If so, let me know. But even if not, please be praying for them. You never know what God has in store for them!
