A group of ten young people and three youth leaders headed over to Avon Tyrell activity centre for three days of outdoor activities, wellness and Bible teaching. This was given to us by Avon Tyrrell, who had received funding to provide an activity residential to young people in Southampton. Here’s what they got up to!
On the first night, we played many ice-breaker games, including tying ourselves up into a massive human knot and trying to untangle ourselves without letting go of each other’s hands! This was great for team-building, which we would need throughout the following two days as many of us faced fears and overcame obstacles. We also played some hilarious games, like Signs! The picture below shows our #1 favourite youth leader modelling our “Sign of the Year”.
We had many great laughs, which helped us to get to know each other better, growing as a group and learning to encourage one another to conquer our fears. We also did some amazing activities like rock climbing, zip wire, archery, and learning to code (courtesy of Microsoft)!
In addition, many of the young people (and leaders) overcame fears of things like heights and water, and generally gained courage to try new things. Each young person excelled in the activities, which was a pleasure to see. Ultimately, we wouldn’t have been able to do it without our amazing Avon Tyrrell activity leaders, Scott and Ben. These guys were amazing at encouraging us, challenging us, and laughing with us over the three days.
At the end of the week, we had the immense privilege of sharing the gospel with them and praying for them. Please do join us in praying for them! Hopefully we will meet them again at our Big Weekend Away in October.
Another great part of our time was having Aaron Griffin teach us from John 15. We learned how Jesus sorts out our inside life, and how God’s word is alive and active, how it is true and brings joy.
We had an excellent time, and we’re so thankful that we had the privilege of being able to go. A huge thank you to those of you who joined in praying for us. It was an amazing experience to go away with this group and see them grow. We now pray that the memories and teaching of this weekend will help these young people to grow in their relationships with God and help them to love each other better.
