If you’re in your twenties and new to Southampton, Glo might be for you!
Glo is our missional community for those in their twenties at Above Bar Church. It is made up of a wide range of people, including those who have grown up in this church, those that have moved to the city for work, some students and a mixture of singles and married couples. Over the last few years, Glo has been growing and has recently expanded to five home groups. We meet across as the city so regardless of where you live, there’s probably a group not too far from you!
Every Wednesday we meet together for home group. We alternate between bible studies, prayer nights, and socials. Our studies normally start with us eating together, then we’ll work through the same bible study as the rest of the church and we’ll share what’s going on in our lives and pray for one another. There’s always a big group social to look forward to – recent socials include a city-wide Easter egg hunt, a trip to the trampoline park, and in the summer you’ll often find us on the Common having a BBQ!
While it’s great to spend time with others of a similar age and life stage to us, we also get involved in other areas of church life, such as joining the Shirley missional community for a weekend away each year on the Isle of Wight. This is also a great opportunity to spend time getting to know each other better and have some great bible teaching. Many of us are also involved in other areas of church life such as helping out with the children’s groups and serving on the welcome team.
Being a part of Glo has been so valuable for many of us who have re-located to Southampton for work, not knowing many people. It is a great community where genuine friendships are formed. We encourage each other in our walk with God and grow in our faith as we learn more about Jesus together.
If you’re interested in getting involved, or would like to know where your nearest home group is, please get in touch or speak to one of us at church. There’s always a few of us at each church service, but most of us come to the evening service and go to the pub afterwards. We would love to meet you!
We would really value your prayer for Glo! We would love it if you would pray that we would continue to be a welcoming community, especially as we grow, so that newcomers always feel included. Pray for courage when sharing our faith with those we live and work with and for oppurtunitues to have meaningful conversations. Please pray also for wisdom for our leaders as they organise home groups, lead bible studies and make decisions.
You can get in touch with Glo in a number of ways! We are @AboveBarGlo on Twitter if you want to see what we get up to each week. If you are interested in finding out a bit more about joining Glo, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org or join our Facebook Group. Alternatively, contact the welcome desk on a Sunday and they can point you in the direction of a leader.
