The beautiful game: introducing ABC FC

I love the Biblical mandate for rest. Rest isn’t just a negative — stopping work, it is a positive — doing things refreshing to the mind, body, and soul. Some of you might call me crazy, but one of the most invigorating things in this world to me is playing a good, competitive match of football.

As Olympic runner and missionary Eric Liddell famously said in the film Chariots of Fire:

“I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.”

Introducing ABC FC

You might not know this, but Above Bar Church has a football team for men! ABC FC compete on Saturdays, from September through to March in the FA (Football Association) affiliated Solent Churches League. Some men in the church also play football on a synthetic pitch on Thursday nights year-round at 9pm at Thornden School, SO53 2DW.

Feel free to come along! We can’t promise you playing time on Saturdays but we welcome any men who want to “try out” on Thursdays.

The aim of the team and the league as a whole is to provide competitive football in a Christ-like manner. You do not have to be a Christian to be on the team but we do hope that you would experience Jesus through our words and actions and that you would respect the ethos of the league.

Recent highlights

Some highlights of the past season include ABC FC defending their crown in the Solent Churches League 5-a-side tournament and also winning the Fair Play Trophy by having the highest scoring in team behaviour as ranked by opposing teams. Unfortunately we were also relegated so we will be out for footballing redemption next season!

What we’re playing for

But even more than promotion, we want more men to know their Saviour and their King. We would appreciate prayer for this to be the case and that no matter what happens on the pitch, we would stand for Jesus.

A world class striker would be nice too.
