‘What!’ I said, knowing full well I’d just let my true feeling out to a young person, ‘They’re coming this week!?’
An inappropriate start!
It was the third week of the CY course (a course for people who want to know more about Christianity) and I was already nervous because this was the week we had to talk about sin.
A young person had just bounded up to me saying how excited they were that they had managed to bring a new friend along. My heart sank a little knowing that this subject could potentially be a difficult one for a young person to come into. But I prayed, and then jumped into it.
That young person loved the session (I was a little more surprised than I should have been!) and attended the youth groups for many years after that.
An incredible resource
That happened around 4 or 5 years ago, when we hosted a youth seeker course. It was a great time and really helpful for both the leaders and young people.
So, this term, we are hosting our very own Youth Alpha course. This will happen on Thursday nights from 7:00 until 8:30 pm at the church building, starting on the 21st September. In the church building will be the 11–16s (both Box and Engage), and in another location will be the 17-18s with their own course.
For those of you who have not seen the youth Alpha video series, it is an incredible resource for young people to think about the bigger questions in life.
A hope for the future
One of the things I found by looking at the film series was it helped me to understand how to explain what I believe to others in a really simple way. I am 30 years old and a professional church worker, so if it can do that for me then it will definitely help a teenager to think through what it is that they, or their friends, believe.
We are really excited about the possibilities that Youth Alpha will provide, not only for our young people, but for all the young people around Southampton. If this Alpha course is a success then the possibilities of hosting these courses in other locations in the city becomes very exciting. If you know of any young people who you think will benefit from this course then please do show them this blog post or get in contact with me by email.
The dates are on the flyer which I have put below too so you know the dates of our course this term. You can also find us on the Apha.org website if you click “try Alpha” and search for courses in Southampton.
Please do join me in praying for the young people who are connected with our church, that we would see both spiritual growth and eyes opened to the truth of the gospel.
