Real Lives returns to Above Bar Church on 7, 9, 10 and 11 October!

For those who don’t know, Real Lives are relaxed evening events where a guest is interviewed about their story, often followed by a short talk explaining the Christian faith. These are excellent events to invite friends, colleagues, and family!

We have heard some amazing stories in the past and I am so excited about this year’s guests!

Billy McCurrie is a minister with a remarkable past. Growing up in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles”, his father was killed by an IRA sniper when Billy was just 12. Seeking revenge Billy joined the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) at 16, and a year later was ordered to kill. Sentenced to life at 17 (he was caught while he was learning how to make bombs), Billy spent 10 years in the Maze Prison and there encountered Jesus. His story of encountering forgiveness and learning to forgive is very powerful. Sunday 7th October, 6.30pm.

Our next guest, Caroline Cox, is both inspiring in her courage and remarkable in her energy! Her full title is The Rt. Hon Professor The Baroness Cox of Queensbury and she is a member of the House of Lords. Whoever you are, you cannot help but be amazed by her ongoing commitment to speaking out for the marginalized and the suffering in this world, including visiting to see with her own eyes (often illegally) war-torn countries, scenes of genocide, and slavery. She has even been to North Korea three times and has given a Bible to one of their highest political officials! Tuesday 9th October, 7.30pm.

Our third guest you may recognise! Dr. Sanjay Mall is a member of Above Bar Church but if in the not-too-distant past you had told him he would be a Christian he would have thought you had lost the plot. Sanjay has a doctorate in chemical engineering and was formerly an atheist. Taking a very sceptical view of Jesus and church (fostered by a love of certain outspoken atheist thinkers such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens), it took a lot to convince Sanjay that he could find truth in Jesus. Wednesday 10th October, 7.30pm.

Tracy Trinita speaks all over the world about Jesus, faith, identity and culture. But before she was a speaker she was Indonesia’s first ever supermodel, modelling for many of the top designers including Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gautier, Kenzo and Benetton, amongst others. Despite all the fame, success and glamour she found it all empty – until she met Jesus. I have heard Tracy speak many times before and so I can say with confidence that she has an incredible story and is a funny and powerful speaker. Thursday 11th October, 7.30pm.

Let’s start praying now for people we would love to come to one, some or all of these evenings. This is an amazing opportunity with engaging guest speakers, and I have no doubt that God wants to do great things through these events!
