Longing for impact: Praying

Prayer for love to overflow from strong holy hearts with joy, hope and peace.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
(Romans 15:13)

At Above Bar Church we believe that a core part of what it means to be church is that we are blessed to be a blessing, and two of Paul’s prayers have this principle at their heart – that the church should overflow with the blessing of God.

Core to being a church that overflows with God’s blessing is that we need to take time to receive from God. Could you take some time today or this week to pause and ask God to fill you with his joy and peace?

“May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.”
(1 Thessalonians 3:11-13)

We learn elsewhere in Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians that some among them were becoming idle. Unwilling to support themselves, they were troublesome and argumentative. Paul writes against this, commending service and excellence in their work. This prayer focuses right in on the solution. He has eternity in mind and his longing is that their love would increase and even overflow for one another. He prays that God would strengthen their hearts in order that they would be holy and blameless.

Paul knows that if, deep down, they were more filled with God’s love and if this love overflowed from them in love for each another, it too would compel them out of idleness and division and into action.

Perhaps this seems a long way from where we are as a church, but let’s be praying today that God would:

  • Protect the unity that we have as a church family
  • Fill us with all joy and peace as we put our trust in Him
  • Particularly fill those who are sick, lonely or hurting in our congregation
  • Cause us to overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit
  • Prevent our hearts from idleness or argumentative behaviour
  • Help us to continue to receive and pass on His blessing to those around us
