Simply netball

It is a Friday evening; I have had a long week at work and I still have to get home and help sort out dinner before rushing a boy to his Friday night Boys' Brigade. All I want to do is slump on the sofa and watch the TV . . .

But – I have joined a netball group! It is a great release and a way to leave work behind, ready for the weekend. Before I know it, I’m shouting, “Here if you need!” to my Centre and, “Shoot!” to the Goal Attack. All tiredness from the working week forgotten.

Why netball? About two years ago, I was looking for a fun way to exercise that didn’t cost a fortune, but was social and fun. I was chatting to a friend and she said that she played netball. Netball is not a game I have played since I left primary school, so I just laughed and said that I couldn’t play as I didn’t remember how to. However, she twisted my arm and two years on I find myself running that netball team.

That team is the Shirley Shooters. The team originally started over 12 years ago out of Shirley Parish Church. The lady who ran it before me has passed on the bibs and the whistle, but is still keen to keep a Christian leadership behind the group.

Introducing Shirley Shooters

We aim to play every Friday at 7 pm for one hour on the courts at Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre. The only thing that stops us is when we don’t have enough players or when the weather makes the court too slippery for us to play. We charge the grand total of £1.00 or £1.50 per game depending on numbers. We are open to any women (or children in year 6 or above).

We do not compete in a league and aim just to play for fun, so keeping score is optional.

Apart from exercise, why netball?

Since starting at Shirley Shooters, I have met a wide variety of people. Above Bar Church believes God is great, He loves everything, and He loves people. We know a lot of people don’t agree with this, but we’d love everyone to have the opportunity to experience it.

As part of the church, Shirley Shooters exists so that women, whatever they believe, can enjoy playing netball together with other women who have experienced God’s love for themselves. We hope this reflects how great we believe God is. So, come along, bring a friend and share with them God’s love by playing netball and following our team values:

  1. Support each other: on and off the court.
  2. Always compete fairly, every game.
  3. Have fun and exercise.

Do we just play netball?

We also try and be social. We are currently planning our Christmas meal and, in the summer, we will have a picnic after a game. I am also arranging regular prayer evenings so that we can share God’s word and pray for those that come along to play netball.
